New Teacher
By Virginia

Clip to ScrapBook
Valerie, congratulations on your new job. I also teach first grade and please do not feel intimidated by teaching religion. You will find that throughout the day you will have opportunities to include religion into your
lessons. Simply by recognizing a child's kindness to classmates or another child's honesty in class are ways to reinforce your lessons. We use the Silver Burdett series "This Is Our Faith" and after I read a page or two with the class, I find the most effective lessons are those when I relate material to the children's lives. We spend more time discussing lessons than we do actually reading
the books!

You will find first graders to be refreshingly innocent and honest. Don't worry about teaching religion, you will be surprised how it all falls in place. A great unit to include as part of your religion curriculum would be character education. In fact, you should save this unit to use in case you eventually transfer to a public school. Character education is a hot topic in all school systems right now.

Best of luck to you in your new job..have a great school year.
