In the same position a few years ago!
By Tammy

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi! I was in the same position three years ago. I looked very hard for a public school position but there were none. I had subbed at this private school but never thought of teaching there full-time. The principal called
me on the recommendation of one of the teachers I had subbed for. Yes, the pay is much less than the public schools (almost $10,000 less) but I don't think I could go to a public school now. I love the private school! Yes, there are the usual problems but for the most part the children are great! The parents can be demanding because they are paying for me to educate their children
but you can look past that. My principal is the absolute best! He's very supportive of new ideas and in dealing with problems. He gives us the freedom to try new things (I'm building a school website this year!) I'm the only 5th grade teacher so I don't have to consult other teachers about what I'm doing. There are so many good reasons to teach in a private school that I could go on forever. Eventually I may have to leave because of money issues with my growing family. That will be the saddest day in my career. A private school is a good place to start a career and you can always move on from there if you want. As far as certification goes it sounds very different from what is required of me (in Illinois) I would check with your local Dept. of Education for their policy on private schools. The fact that this school is not accredited could be a definite problem. I wish you lots of luck whatever you decide. Let us know how things go.
