something to try
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
Next time your "gloom and doom" colleague starts in, have a story of your own prepared. As she winds down, mention something fun, interesting or enriching that has happened in the school or in your classroom. In other words, try moving the conversation toward the positive. This is a subtle technique and I don't tend to be very subtle. But I have seen it work over and over in negative faculty rooms either when I tried it or another teacher did. It won't stop the negative talk altogether, but it should allow you to leave with a better taste in your mouth. At least you can try.
