behavior management By reg

I just started this week with my third graders today, a reward chart. Set it up any way, grid, star, bullseye, whatever. Whenever I see a group behaving the way I like or according to procedures (I have them sitting in Heterogeneous| groups) I will pop on a star on the chart. They have become so competitive between groups that transitions have been wonderfull (That is when I usually use the chart.) I also have procedures on a chart for everything we do in class. Meet and greet to wrap and pack. So, if someone gets out of control, I just point to a procedure. If they get really bad, (two call downs) | | they stay in for recess and copy procedures. One time, I had my whole class in (except two that had gone to the bathroom) copying procedures while I was outside enjoying the fresh air. It took the entire recess! But that has never happened again. I haven't even yelled at this class. Also, I sometimes pop in a reward here and there. (Gum while doing math, inside game breaks, etc.) I use a "secret word" if I think they are too chatty. I will say the secret word is...... Only one time. Then the students who repeat the word get to be first in line, go out early, all kinds of treats. I just try to keep everybody on their toes -- and happy. And, I do all this with a smile... I am consistent, and they know I mean what I say -- but we still have fun and enjoy class.
