    The Great Poetry Race!

I heard this at a workshop this summer-it's a way of working on fluency using poetry:

On Monday you give your students a poem. You read it together a few times and that's it. The kids take it home and for every person they read it to, they get a signature. They bring it back on Friday and you discuss how many signatures each student got. You can hold a contest to see who can get the most signatures or you can have the class set a goal and see if they can reach it or beat it. You can graph the outcomes over time to see the fluctuation of the numbers from week to week...one teacher who did this said that her kids were stopping people in the grocery store to read to them!

I ordered a poetry magnet kit (for kids) for my classroom this year. Has anyone ever used one of these in your classroom? How exactly did you use it?
