The dilemma By Just Wondering

Thanks, G.M., for taking the time to respond to my concerrns. Actually, by not having a response before I went to the interview, things took an interesting turn. As you surmised, I was very uptight about the whole prospect| of what the job might entail and how to conduct myself during the interview. As it turned out, my 21-year old daughter calmed me down and put things into perspective for me. She simply told me to go to the interview, listen to what the principal had to say about the job, present myself with confidence in my teaching ability, and then evaluate whether this would be right for me because, | | ultimately, the choice is mine whether to accept any given offer of a job. This is exactly the kind of pep talk her Dad and I would have given her in similar circumstances. Isn't it nice to know that our kids actually do listen to and learn from us?!Well, the upshot to the story is that while Title I is frequently limited to the primary grades, it also can be extended through grade 6 if the circumstances of a particular school warrant it. This building has a student population that is heavily bilingual as well as falling into the socio-economic criteria that requires Title I services at the intermediate level. In particular, they have just received funding to extend into the 5th and 6th grades which they are anxious to do because of the need to prepare for state-wide assessments in the Spring. I was very relieved to hear that this was the case because I have a good deal of experience at these grade levels with both reading and the language arts program that they use. Also, the principal said that there is a great deal of support in terms of training and resource materials for the people who will be hired (they have more than one available slot). I was extremely encouraged by this and told the principal that I would be very interested in the job. She told me that a decision would be made by Friday and I had very good vibes about the way that things had gone. So, for now,I'm back to keeping my fingers crossed and praying. It just proves the point that you never know what fate has in store for you so you have to be open to all the possibilities.
