I told the principal that I took a lot of time thinking about the offer and really appreciated the job offer. But that I had to turn it down because I KNEW in my heart that it wasn't right for me at the time. I didn't explain anymore than that. (It would have required me to go to night school while teaching during the day - could you imagine!) Anyway, the principal said she appreciated my honesty. She seemed really genuine. So perhaps you don't have to mention that you don't feel qualified, it's just that it's not right for you at this time. But then again, perhaps you are selling yourself short and/or have too high of expectations for yourself. Do you think you would like to work with primary students? But you are reluctant to do so because you think you won't be as effective as you think you should be? Remember, the principal knows that you haven't any formal training in this area. I don't think he/she would have the same expectations for you as he/she would for someone who has had the formal training. Selling yourself short and having too high of expectations for yourself come to mind because I am guilty of these two mistakes. They may not apply to you. So, I hope that you don't get upset with me bringing them up. You don't need more added stress right now. I don't know what else to add at the moment. Perhaps you could have posted on Vent II board. I know this is for teachers who have taught awhile. But I have seen beginning teachers post their concerns on this board because they knew that experienced teachers would most likely reply. Again, keep up posted! Just remember, one day you will probably look back and laugh at all this. Take Care & Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide
