does age matter?

I don't think so. I was fresh out of the university but was hired over the bunch of 22 year olds who had interviews along with me. I think I just had what they were looking for. In many cases, though, it also comes down to politics. It's not what you know, it's who you know. This is an unfortunate fact in many professions. Congratulations on your job and good luck with it!
