"A confession"
By lorla

Clip to ScrapBook
The interviewing committee knew I was a first year teacher (I'm in my mid 40's) and I just assumed the rest of the staff did, too. As the year went on I realized many did not!! and they assumed I was experienced for several
reasons, my age (of course) but also my actions (I'd subbed while going to schoo), however I never hid the fact that I was new. Actually, I wanted the staff to know I was new so I'd be able to get valuable advice and tips, which I did, and a lot of support, too. Turns out several people there also started teaching in their 30's-40's. I sort of let the kids know and sort of didn't,
mentioned all my knowledge about upper grades in the context of sub experience, and, of course, they knew I was new to the school. I told parents when it came up in conversation but I don't think I was as "scary" to them as having a new teacher who was in her early 20's would be. After all, I have children and life experience and I believe that was a positive to parents.
