What they need to know
By Dawn

Clip to ScrapBook
Thanks for asking!

First, ORGANIZATION. How to keep an assignment book and organize their homework. How to remember to turn it in the next day. I know that for some kids it comes naturally, and for others it will never
come! But keep emphasizing it!

Second, to agree with the others, writing. But more to the point, try to help them enjoy writing. The students really cringe when we write. They dread it and think of it as a horrible chore. We need to help them see it as a necessary part of life that can be very pleasant. Help them learn to grade their own work and their peers' too, so they can

get an idea of what good writing is and what is just unacceptable.

Finally, the ability to navigate a textbook, using the subtitles, captions, bolded headings, etc., to find information. Many students look at us blankly and seem truly lost. I know that elem teachers teach it, but keep at it! Along the same lines, use of dictionary and thesaurus without assistance.

Hope this helps. Have a good year!
