simple activities
By Holly

Clip to ScrapBook
The most basic diffusion activity is a demo I've always used as an intro. Stand in one corner of your room with all doors and windows closed. Spray a strong perfume. (I used to teach high school, in every class somebody
has a strong scent!). Ask the students to raise their hands when they smell the perfume, and keep them up. A very clear pattern emerges. I often end up discussing air currents due to air conditioning/heaters.

The next activity is starch and iodine. Iodine water in a beaker with a tube of dialysis membrane filled with starch in it. (You have to review color change indicators first.)

Osmosis

- classic potato in 3 beakers of water with various salt concentrations.

Mitosis - prepared slides, cheek cell scrapings (now often banned as "human tissue"), and a pipecleaner lab I wrote.

If you want more info, let me know.
