1st day science ideas

Hi Elizabeth. This is my first year of 6th grade after 2 years of high school. I was so glad to see someone else with questions! I'm teaching block, so our first day is nearly 90 minutes long and repeats itself the second day. In my science classes I'm introducing our theme for the year, then going on to a patterning activity.I'm debating jumping right into observation skills (with the fake candles?), but haven't decided. The school is brand new, in Japan and I haven't quite figured out how to obtain supplies yet.
