    Managing Rocket Math

Here is how we manage Rocket Math. We have two hanging file boxes, one for addition and one for subtraction. If students end up getting to multiplication and division, I usually make them their own booklet as there are generally less than five students who get that far. In the hanging files, we have a file for each letter. These files are filled with many copies of a full sheet, practice on top, timed test on the bottom. Students start with A the first week or so of school. I put A on their desk but after that, they are responsible for getting their correct letter. After they complete the test, I correct them. I always do 2 students at a time, if their answers don't agree, it is easy to see who has the incorrect answer or if both of them are incorrect. Seldom do two different children have the same incorrect answer. On papers that pass, I place the words "Go on to ___" and the letter they should do next. Those who don't pass, are asked to "Try __ again, please". These papers are put on their desk the next morning. They go to the file, pull out their paper and practice until they finish or class starts.

I don't keep track in a grade book where students are. We do weekly 10 minute trials that are the vehicle for determining progress in mastering facts. Rocket Math is simply practice in smaller increments. If students go farther than they should, they generally can't pass the level they have picked and end up having to move back a few levels after a couple of days of not passing the level they decided they should do.
