What skills do you teach?

Jeanine:

Thank you for responding! I also teach the seventh graders reading and sixt graders. I too only see the eighth graders who are at risk. Can you please help me with some basics? What skills do you teaach your seventh
graders? I was planning on teaching a new skill every week. My lessons are going to be short and to the point. I am going to require that my students take the skill and apply it for homework (SQ3R a textbook chapter.) I was thinking of teaching reading comprehension strategies, mapping, plot elements,
study skills, etc. I will be teaching the same thing to my sixth and seventh
graders since this is the first year of the program. Next year the seventh graders will focus more on study skills. How did you set up your reading program for your at risk students. I am going to assess them with Eckwall Reading Inventory and Slossan. I will also do some informal reading assessmetns. I will then develop and ILP (individualized learning plan) for each student that icnludes assessment results, strengths, next steps, and goals. How does this sound? School starts in three weeks. I jsut got hired! I am really excited. I also get to interview people for my own full time aide! Please give me some feedback and suggestions. You can email me if you like!
Thanks!
Melissa
