I don't know if this would work for you but I have a reading center in my language arts clsss. It has a couch with a carpet and some bean bags. i created a 70's Retro theme with smiles, vw bugs, and tie die stuff. I have a lava lamp and a blow up chair. The smiles have cool words on them like groovy and peace. I just carried this theme throughout the room. I have a lot of bulletin boards with their works and flower power daisies displayed around them. They love it!! It is alot like the Austin Powers movies. All of this environment just allows them to feel comfortable. I hope this helps.
