Writing portfolios
By Alisha

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach 7th and 8th grade Language Arts. I used writing portfolios as a way to store all writings last year. However, I got a great idea this summer from a pacesetters workshop.
Have the students place all writings
in the portfolio. At the end of the unit, have them choose three to keep and toss the rest. Grade the three they keep.
At the end of the next unit, have them pick four total. Toss the rest. Then, have them revise the four they keep and place them in the portfolio. Grade the four and continue the process.
The students may pick the same piece each time, but a revision must
be done. By the end of the year, the folders will contain a great deal of revised writing. It is a great way to show them how far a piece of writing can come and how far they have come during the year.
