hmmm ... i wonder? i would be afraid that they'd leave the experience with more sterotypes than information ... i have a problem with the fact that Cooney's terrorist is an Arab given the current world situation ... at my school we do a unit on developing countries and we discuss the historical causes of their situations before doing a short unit on the UN ... that's when i am planning to do it with my sixth graders ... by then we are half way through the year and this is an international school so the kids are pretty mature and very PC! the other thing about that book is that the main character is a teenager who, initially, is into nothing but herself ... i think middle schoolers could see themselves in that role ... not sure about 5th graders ... if you do decide to do it, let me know, perhaps we could get our classes chatting about it together ... another topic altogether, but we just finished a unit on natural environments where we did three books by roland smith in literature circles: thunder cave, jaguar and last lobo ... they are fantastic and would be excellent for fifth grade ... they're already on my christmas list for my ten year old nephew!
