island...

Clip to ScrapBook
I am currently using this book in my lit circles and the kids love it! The beginning of the book is great for teaching similes and metaphors. There is also a lot of great vocabulary.
You could have children draw a map
of the island (details in ch. 1 or 2).
You could have them research Native customs from around the world and compare/contrast with book.
Let them design some jewelry that the island people would have worn.
Have them write a letter from Karana to the people in her tribe who left the island.
Somewhere between the 15th and 20th chapters, Karana describes a devil fish.
(an octopus) But she never calls it an octupus. You could have them describe something in a creative way and let peers guess what it is.
That's as far as I've read in the book as of today. I read it a while back but can't remember how it ends. Hope these help you.
