Clip to ScrapBook
The book itself gives quite a few titles of picture books and skills they illustrate. I read Peppe the Lamplighter to my kids to illustrate how to make connections to a book and write a response letter. It was one suggested by the authors. They also use excerpts for certain skills, and they give several suggestions for short stories you can read aloud and teach skills with. Their discussion of books that illustrate point of view is especially good.

So far I like their approach. I plan to implement the small groups using our reading textbook. That way I can tailor selections to high, medium, and low ability readers, and can tailor the skills practice too.
