How about games. Children often feel if they are playing games they are not "Working" You can play bingo to help word recognition. There are 100 and 1 commercial games even scrabble.
Buddy them up with a younger class so they can help them read. That way they have to know the basic words to correct the younger children. Get your children to write books for their buddy.
Do lots of oral reading to them your self.
