reading instruction
By Chantal

Clip to ScrapBook
I also teach 5th grade and understand how you feel. I have avoided using the basal and insted went with trade books. Last year we used Shiloh, Dear Mr. Henshaw, Search for the Shadowman to name a few. The kids had worked
from basals and workbooks in the past and they really enjoyed the stories this year! We have a 1 hr. block of time for reading instruction so it allows time to read and discuss as well as work on comprehension and fluency skills. There are days when we spend less time on the novel and more on skills but I am learning to balance it out. You do know when you are ruining the text with
analysis; Suzanne is so right about that! I realized that when we took 2+ months to get through Dear Mr. Henshaw and at that point I had totally ruined the flow of the book! Yes, the tests are important but they should not drive the machine.
