I teach fifth. I have begun to read Guiding Readers and Writers Grades 3-6 by Fountas and Pinnell! It is a very very long book,,, 500 pages but it gives examples, reproducibles and real-classroom dialogue in classrooms that| have a balanced literacy program.... reading non-fiction is part of this.... I really urge you to check this book out...it was a challenge to begin reading it, but now that I have, I have stickies all over... We have just ordered national geographics for kids which I am sure will be great...oh and never underestimate TFK, Time for Kids!!! I basically teach the basic concepts around | | nonfiction-- purpose--to gain information, things which will help us while we read, reading captions, bold print, graphs, tables, maps,,etc...all those things that help set a purpose for reading..... using stickies to encourage kids to mark and remember when they have a question, connection,etc.. Stephanie Harvey's book Nonfiction Matters is great also!!! She actually came to my school to do a mock lesson...WOW, she was inspiring....so, basically, I would check these books out..once you have taught these non-fiction reading strategies, kids can really gain alot from the material you have to teach in your curriculum. Oh, high-interest non-fiction is so important. If you are teaching boring things like reading bold print, titles, captions, etc, then choosing high-interest material for them to read is essential!!! GOOD LUCK! I hope I have helped some!
