Marvin? or 100 Dresses??
By Helen

Clip to ScrapBook
I have read both of these books to second graders. I have read " Marvin" to my first graders. I would think that you should read both books and decide, based on what you know about your students. I read "Marvin, Why Pick
on Me?" to one of the roughest bunches of kids I have ever taught..and they were engrossed! I am not so sure "100 Dresses" would have gotten through to them on the first day. I did read it to them later in the year, but they were not as receptive as they were to Louis Sachar's book.
Both are excellent books!!!! I love them. I am just saying, think about your audience.

If you

like books with a lesson..many lessons hidden in its text....not necessarily a first day book, but great....read FINDING THE GREEN STONE by Alice Walker. it too teaches about love, caring, sharing, understanding, community, teamwork, group support......etc.
