Science chapter books
By Lori Carter

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi,

Here are some books I have tied in to different units, though not all are strong science informative books just tie-ins. Some do have quite a bit of science thrown into the story. Just some ideas. Hope it gets your
creative juices going. Lori

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen makes a good science read aloud. See Jim Trelease's description in The Read Aloud Handbook. Environment and survival.

Also, many of Jean Craighead George's books make good read alouds when studying the environment. There's an Owl in the Shower and Julie come immediately to mind.

Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat is another

great story and you learn lots about owls!

Rascal by Sterling North is a great study of the behavior of a racoon.

For space studies, try a biography of an astronaut. Childhood of Famous Americans have Neil Armstrong and John Glenn in print. There is also one on Virgil Grissom that the library might have. Rooftop Astronomer is a short biography of Maria Mitchell, one of the first recognized women astronomers. Another neat resource for space is the Jim Weiss tape of Galileo and the Stargazers. Great ture stories of the early astronomers. On the other side you have the story of Archimedes for some good physical science stories and geometry and you cannot beat Jim Weiss as a story teller.

Fever, 1793 or Graveyard Girl are stories of yellow fever outbreaks. I have used Graveyard Girl when studying insects and talking about mosquitoes and insect pests. I also used have used Why Mosquitoes Buzz in Peoples ears with this unit. It ties in nicely with a health unit also.

Mary on Horseback is great to work with on a health unit. It is short and describes the true story of the nurse who started the Appalachina Nurse Corps. Medical history and practices.

Night of the Twisters works well with a weather unit. THe Cay has a hurricane in the story and strong elements survival.

Out of the Dust would work well with a unit on land conservation. It takes place during the Oklahoma dust storms.

I love to read the old book Half Magic by Edward Eager when studying fractions.

For electricity, we read the Childhood of Famous Americans bio of Thomas Edison.

The Trumpet of the Swan works well for nature studies as well as the old standard Charlotte's Web for spiders.

The Cricket on Times Square is a good tie in for insects, too.

When studying steam power, we have read books with train travel or steamboats.

For sound, I have tied in THe Mozart Season by Virginia Ewer Wolff. Yolanda's Genius works here, too. Both are about child musicians.

Kokopelli's Flute by Will Hobbs has more about pack rats than you ever want to know ;-) but it's alot of fun, too. It also talks about deer mice and hantavirus and how disease is carried by the rodents. All in a mystery/fantasy story with lots of history, too.

Jason's Gold by Will Hobbs has some good information on gold and fool's gold for a rock unit.

Earthquake at Dawn by Kristiana Gregory -- good for a geology unit -- the San Fransico Earthquake -- also the main character is a photographer -- so works for a camera unit

A Taste of Blackberries by Doris Smith for a bee unit -- also good for talking about severe allergies and anaphylactic shock.
