I also highly recommend Holes by Louis Sachar. I used it just as a read alous with my 5th graders this year and they absolutely loved it. These are kids who moslty are very reluctant readers but Holes kept them on the edge of their seats. I plan to purchase a classroom set with my own money to use in guided reading next year. Not only is this a book my kids really loved, but it lends itself so well to teaching reading comprehension strategies, especially question/prediction.
