Kindergarten themes
By Katy

Clip to ScrapBook
When I taught a straight K, all my teaching related to a theme. I did a few quick themes when the nice weather came - first on colors, then on light. We did art projects with colors, tied it in with feelings and diversity...
I remember using Color Dance (Ann Jonas I think) The Crayon Box that talked, The Land of Many Colors, Red is Best (Stinson?) and a book about how we got colors. (I forget the title) Then after our mini light theme, we made suncatchers which incorporate both colors and light. I forget what books I used with the light theme. Sometimes I'll pick a theme and type in that word and "juvenile
literature" into the library computer and will get titles that way. You could also do author studies. My students loved Leo Lionni and learned how to rip paper to make the mice like Leo Lionni's mice and then we made our own big book called Mice are Nice. My kids really liked the Kevin Henkes author study we did, Mem Fox, Dr. Seuss, and are also enjoying the Ann Morris author study we are doing now. She is a non-fiction writer who uses photographs for illustrations. My students are going to write a class book about school and use the digital camera to take photographs, just like the style Ann Morris uses.
Good luck!
