Reading Roundtable
By Kellymc37

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Patty,

Reading Roundtable provides an opportunity for students to discuss books they are reading, give opinions on them, and recommend books to each other.

It really falls into two types. In the first, a small group
of children reads the same book and then discusses it during Reading Roundtable. They can use the discussion starters which I'll list for you in a minute.

The small group has a discussion like the one I'll describe below.

In the second, a student or group reviews a book they have read that the others have not and shares it with the whole class. They can use the same discussion

starters. This is the type I used with the Beatrice Potter books.

The discussion starters are:
The title of this book is....
The author of this book is....
I chose this book because.....
The part I liked the best is....
This book is mostly about...

In this type, the whole class participates since it's more of a book share. I have the class arrange their chairs in a large circle for Reading Roundtable so we can all hear.

It is a good way to motivate them to read books their friends enjoyed and lends itself really well to an author study.

Hope this explains the process well enough for you.

Kelly
