I teach 2nd grade in CA using Open Court Reading. The best part about the program, in my opinion, is the use of strategic reading using the comprehension strategies that good readers use naturally. The strategies
We usually focus on one or two strategies per story. Especially when first introducing them. Then, later in the year students raise their hands throughout the strategic reading and say which strategy they want to use and share something. Now... I have 2nd graders who just listen to what a person says in regards to a story and will spontaneously shout out which strategy he/she is using. They have really internalized the strategies that good readers use to comprehend what they read. That is the goal! I can send you better explanations of the strategies and a way to introduce them if you want. I was a mentor teacher in my district and developed little cheat sheets of the strategies. Just email me. Good luck. Kelly
