I Love This Theme

Clip to ScrapBook
Hello! I teach 5th grade and I do an author study on Roald Dahl each year! I love teaching about his style of writing, plus the students really enjoy reading the books. I teach 2 different reading programs in my room:
1) Guided Reading, and 2) Independent Reading. During Guided Reading, I had my students read Witches as a class. As we read each day, we discussed Dahl's interesting way of writing. We also did a complex vocabulary development unit with this. Witches lends it's self to great vocab! During Ind. Reading, I offered ALL of his books (I have multiple copies I have ordered from book orders,
gottenfrom interlibrary loan, and at garage sales). Each of the books is rated on a points system based on the reading level. If the book is at a 5th grade level the book is scored 5 points, if it's lower it get's less than that, and higher, then it's scored higher. In order to get an A student must read 12 points, B = 10 points, C = 8 points. While the students are reading at their desks, I do comprehension checks with ind, students. Then, for this writing piece, students have to compare The Witches book to the Ind book(s) they read. They do this in their Reader's Response Journals. I hope this helps! Good luck!
