I read this as a read-aloud, after my sub started it one day when I was out. I personally didn't care for it much, and most of my 4th graders also were not too enthralled. I had a few boys who were interested, but not many. I don't know why I didn't like it, but I just never made a "connection" with Bud, and I felt like my kids didn't either.Especially the girls. I realize this isn't terribly helpful information, but it was just one class's opinion. Maybe it would be better as a reading group thing with actual activities and such? I think it was just so different a time/life that none of my very rural, modern kids could "relate" to a chapter here and there.
