Detroit job market
By Mary

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Barbara,
I live in the metro Detroit area and recently graduated from the Univ. of Michigan with my BA in elem. ed. I did not get a full time teaching position this year, but I did not pursue one fully either. My
son started kdg. and I wanted to be there for it, I did however, recently, get a position as a full time building sub and am in a first grade classroom until January so that's nice to have a regular paycheck coming in. lol! As for the job market around here, well, if you speak Arabic as many of my friends do you are pretty much guaranteed a job in Dearborn no questions asked :o). If not,
the market depends on your requirements and expectations. Some rural schools are hiring (even now) but the pay tends to be low and they are pretty out there. The city of Detroit is ALWAYS looking for teachers and pays pretty well to start, but it's a tough district. Not that the kids are bad but I have just heard its not teacher friendly benefit wise, etc. I could be wrong. If you are in the market for subbing positions you can pretty much get in in any district. They all need subs. I guess if you look hard enough and make yourself stand out there are jobs out there... but you gotta be willing to put in a lot of effort. wink wink. If you ever want to chat or have any specific questions just drop me a line my email is included.
Smiles
Mary
