Las Vegas, etc. By Carolyn

I teach in South Carolina. Our pay isn't that great, but we have not had the problems with lack of stability as they have in Las Vegas. We had a decent raise--around 4%--this year. In addition, the state reimburses us| for out-of-pocket expenses from the beginning of the year. We have the mean and ugly PACT, which is actually too hard for many of the kids. Kids in grades 3-8 have to take it. I live in North Carolina. My husband teaches in North Carolina. NC has a lot of trouble hanging on to teachers. As was mentioned above, the pay is really bad, and union representation is negligible. Teachers | | got a very small raise this year after threating to start a "sick out." It is even supposedly illegal to strike in North Carolina. This sounds like a violation of our constitution, however it "flies" here. If you are desperate for a full-time job and can't get one anywhere else, you could surely get a job in NC, get some experience, then head out of town.
