OK to TX
By JulieP

Clip to ScrapBook
Hello. I too graduated from a college in Oklahoma (UCO). I came to Texas to teach in 98 and the market was in dire need. Right now, all of the districts around me have 0 elementary positions open, unless you are bilingual
or esl. The pay is WAY BETTER her, but cost of living is a little higher. We were paying rent of $385 in OK and it jumped to $810 for Irving.

If you choose Texas, I would search the web for information about TAAS. This is the Texas Assesment of Academic Student Skills. I had a hard time my first year adjusting to TAAS when OK is an ITBS geared state, and that is what most of

my college courses covered. Needless to say, the two tests are completely different, and the way you and the students are expected to approach the TAAS can be extremely overwhelming if you do not know what to expect. TAAS starts in third grade, and continues through the grad exam in high school (4th and 8th also take a writing assessment).

Good luck, and if you decide on Texas, keep in touch.
