First, my email policy is 24 hours, not including weekends, holidays, etc. Sometimes I get such obnoxious emails that I need to plan what I respond, get advice, etc. Second, as far as extra credit and things, I have a crate in my room for "optional work." These assignments are never worth an entire grade; they'll just add 15-25 points to a low daily grade. I'm not a big believer in dropping grades for some and not all and this keeps me from dropping any. The students have about 15 opportunities for "optional work" throughout the year. They are told about new work when it goes in the file and there's always a deadline for it to be turned in so that I'm not stuck grading extra stuff at the last minute. I have found it helpful to put these things on my website calendar so that parents and students know about assignments in advance.
