Teacher shortage
By Mary

Clip to ScrapBook
Kaitlin:

In the New England area elementary ed positions are scarce. Each job posted will literally have hundreds of applicants. Unless a candidate also has certification in SPED, math, science or foreign languages, the
chances of securing a contract are exceedingly slim. As others have stated, there are many factors which affect a person's capacity or willingness to relocate or look beyond a certain geographical area. In my case, although there are a number of openings in a community north of where I live, it would be a minimum of 1 1/2 hours of driving time each way through difficult traffic conditions.
I am not willing to commute three or more hours per day especially when the school day also includes time outside of class preparing, grading, planning, etc. to say nothing of late meetings. I have a husband, home and family that I am responsible for, too.

Perhaps you did not experience the same degree of discouragement in your job search that others here have expressed. If so, consider yourself to be very fortunate. As the saying goes, Do not judge another until you have walked a mile in his shoes".
