temporary positions By Carolyn

I agree with Cathy-Dee. It seems that school districts like to keep you as a sub if you are a reliable sub. I knew a teacher once who went from one long-term substitute position to another while the district kept filling full-time positions all around her. Yes, she did want a full-time job. Yes, she was extremely reliable, conscientious, and GOOD at what she did--working with primary level kids. Her husband was even a fifth grade teacher in a neighboring school in the district, so you would have thought that they would have hired her right away! After about five years of being a long-term sub, | | she FINALLY got a job in that district. (I worked in this district, by the way and watched subs and assistants work "forever" that way.) The same held true with the teaching assistants. In Pennsylvania, where this school was, there was such a large supply of certified elementary teachers that hopefuls took positions as teaching assistants. The salary was much lower than a teacher's salary, and these certified assistants were expected to do things like run a Title I reading program on their own. I worked with a teaching assistant who taught the Title I reading classes, and she finally received a full-time fourth grade position after six years of working as an assistant. Talk about trying to win the grand prize!
