Rather than seeing you throw in the towel just yet, consider that there may be a lot of competition in your area, and this is why you can't get a job. Are you living in the overglutted Northeast--Ohio, Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, etc.? If so, rather than abandoning your dream, consider relocating. I got a job in North Carolina after subbing for six years. I subbed, hoping that one day I would get a job as an elementary teacher. I lived in the Northeast where there were too many teachers being graduated from education programs, so subbing for six more years would not have necessarily have earned me a position.
While I subbed, I saw people graduating from college who got jobs because they were friends or relatives of people in the position to hire teachers. Social Studies is not an easy job to get, but you can get a job if you are willing to go to the right area(s) of the country. I didn't like the idea of moving, but I am so happy now that I did. I love living in North Carolina and would never even think of returning to live in New Jersey again! (Hey, think of it as giving up those snowy winters!)
