*Take your child to the grocery store. Have them help you get things from the shelves whenever possible. Point out environmental print that is meaningful to them (oh look - the word pop in your pop tarts starts with p and ends with p!). Talk to them about the different kinds of fruits and vegetables and encourage them to notice things in the store. *Play "I Spy* *Play word games while you wait at the doctor's office or are driving in the car. "If cat is spelled c-a-t, how do you spell hat? If hat is h-a-t, how do you spell bat?" (my son LOVED this game when he was a little guy) *Play the ABC game on long car trips - look for words that start with the letter of the alphabet that comes next, starting with A. The first person to Z is the winner! *Challenge your kids to learn the ABC song phonetically instead of just the letters - it's fun to sing it with the sounds instead and a little silly! *Count things - silverware, pennies, legos as you pick them up, how many kids are in the pool?, how many times can you bounce the ball, etc. *Talk about money and let your kid count the change - count pennies by 1, count nickels by 5, count dimes by 10! *Take your child to the library and check out books together and read together IN the library as well as at home. Go in for story time and sit with our kids and listen to stories. Talk about the stories afterwards. What happened first? What happened last? What was their favorite part? *Make sure your child knows his/her full name, address, home phone number, and how to tie their shoes before the first day of school! *Spend time getting your child used to sitting still for periods of time and on waiting his/her turn and on following a routine. That will be so helpful when school starts and they are expected to sit and listen to instruction or to raise their hand before talking. *Be sure your child knows how to hang up their own coat, put a straw in their own juice pouch, and open a milk carton themselves. *Work on 2 or 3 step directions - build up over time. "Can you please go get your coat?" turns in to "Can you please go put this on the toy shelf and then go get your coat?" and eventually turns in to, "Can you please go put this on the toy shelf, go get your coat, and then tell your sister that we're ready to go?" ~Tangerine
