The last couple of years I have been teaching subtraction w/expanded notation. This seems to help. They can really see what it means to go get 10 more. I use the subtraction poem too w/a little bit of a variation. It goes like this:
More on top or more on the floor?
More on the floor, go next door and get ten more.
More on top, no need to stop.
Numbers the same, zeros the game.
My kids have white boards and we do lots and lots of practice!
