At my school we do have parents come in with their kids, the kids stay in a classroom with several school adults - our TA's, speech path, and other support staff. They plant some seeds in a little cup with a little popsicle sign to put in it that say's, "Thanks for coming to grow at Bayfield Kindergarten"; there are a couple other activities that allow the adults to observe how they cut, write their names, etc. The teaching team in the mean while is explaining our program to the parents, answering questions, etc. We have a baggie that we put together for all the kids that they get to take with them that has a pencil in it, a nametag so they can see how their name should look (there are magnets on it so they can keep it on their refrig.); an alphabet chart and on the back of that our kindergarten words; a shoe for shoe tying practice over the summer.
