rounding out the curriculum
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
My principal likes it because I integrate whenever possible. In answer to the question: "How do you make children well rounded in the basics?" I would respond, "I integrate the basics into everything I teach."

As for
me, I bring math and reading skills into social studies and science. Children have to interpret graphs in social studies, for example. We work on the reading skills of cause/effect (Why did the Civil War occur? and Why did the oil separate from the water when we mixed them together?), main idea, making inferences, etc.
Of course, we also work on math skills in both science and social
studies: Look at the bar graph and tell me what the population of the United States was in 1850. In your experiment with the moving ball, how many centimeters/meters farther did the basketball roll than the marble? Also, when I teach a skill in reading, we don't just use it in reading. We use it across the board in every subject area, even health. If I taught cause/effect in reading, I make sure I use it in every subject I teach that week.

I hope this gives you an idea.
