I also have a Student Info sheet I have the parents fill out or take home and send back with the students the first day. It has a place for all info I can get off of the cum cards in the office plus a place to tell me something they want me to know about their child. It is interesting to see what they write and sometimes is it the only correct phone number we have. I also take pictures of my students with their families. This is the only time I will see some of these parents all year as some never come for conferences, open house, etc. At the end of the year I give the students a card with this picture. If they don't come that night, then I make sure I get a picture the first day of school.
