One of the most talked about projects ...

One girl in my room stuck two birthday candles in the end of a hard boiled egg. Then she lit the candles and while holding the egg, set an old milk bottle over the candles and egg. As the candle went out, the egg slowly got sucked into the bottle. To get it out, she simply blew into the bottle. People didn't tire of watching this. She was able to show it over and over (1 1/2 hours afternoon and 1 1/2 hours evening), going through only a dozen eggs.

Another project involved using four different sugars in a recipe of brownies. The student used powdered sugar, regular white sugar, brown sugar, and raw sugar. Along with research about each, the student brought batches to school and did a blind taste test with our class to see which brownie was preferred. Then she created a graph showing the results. She also measured the height of each kind of brownie and graphed those results.

I had another student who collected some dirt, added newspaper and one raw egg and let that sit in a liter soda bottle. It had light on it and was covered with plastic wrap. Once a day she would vent it. What happened over the four weeks was very interesting. She noticed the dirt at the sides of the bottles changing color as microbes grew (red to green). She also noticed little thread worms appear and even a snail who laid eggs. What I liked about this project was that there was always something new to notice. That dirt was alive!!

Let me know if you want some more ideas. They're still fresh in my mind!
