Poetry By nikkii

I teach second grade and we started off the year doing a poem every Friday. We make a copy of the poem for each student...we recite the poem, talk about the form, the rhymes if there are any, and highlight the important parts| etc. then we practice it a couple of times. Next they color the poem boarders. illustrations etc., and cut the poem out and glue it on a blank sheet of white paper we put in a 3 prong folder (we started with about 20 sheets of white paper in the folder). Then they are to take the folder home, and read it to at least one person, and that person needs to sign the poem sheet( some go overboard |
| with many signatures). The notebooks are due back on Wednesday. For each student that returns their poetry book on Wednesday we mark one number on the hundred's chart. When the class gets to 100 signatures...we invite parents/other relatives to the "Party of "P's" ( Party of Poetry) Each student prepares a poem to read to the whole group on that day...they may read one we have done in class, or I have several poetry books they may choose a poem to read.....I brought in a podium, and we used our classroom microphone...the children all loved it and the parents were so impressed with how the children did! We celebrate after with "P" foods...popcorn, punch, pink lemonade, pumpkin pie muffins, popsicles, pudding, pretzels, pizza etc. We didn't have all of these foods everytime...parents were more than willing to send in snacks. It was a great way to introduce poetry and get the children excited about it! I had about 27 parents in my room the first time! Some even wrote their own poetry to recite! Good luck if you try it! :)
