Electricity - kids LOVE this! By jmeanne
|
| I'd start with electricity. Get some copper wire (or paperclips), a few batteries, and some tiny light bulbs. Have the kids try to make the bulbs light. There are some great AIMS lessons on this. Go to http://wwws.aimsedu.org/aims_store/Sparkys-Light-Kit-p-1327.html and for $2.00 you can get a great lesson on this. Or if you have the Electrical Connections book, that is even better. From there, it's a quick jump to talking about insulators and conductors and having the kids use the circuits they constructed to test materials. I think once you play around a bit with things, your comfort level will rise and you'll feel more at ease when you teach simple machines. BTW - using the book "Sheep in a Jeep" is a great way to talk about forces and things connected with simple machines -- it's a REALLY easy book, but lends itself to great experiments and science discussions.
