My Opinion... By Rinkydink84

| One thing I wish all mentor teachers would realize is..... student teaching is the most overwhelming semester of an education major's life!!! There is no way college can ever prepare you for what it is like when you are actually in the classroom 5 days a week. There were a lot of things I knew, but did not know them by name. My mentor teacher asked me on my first day... "What research based practices do you use?" I was like "HUH!?!?" For example, although I knew about Cooperative Learning I would not have been able to place Kagan's name to it. I just had a really horrible student teaching semester. My mentor teacher thought I was a lazy idiot, but my university supervisor, the principal, and anyone else that observed me thought I was great (hmmmmm). I am begging you to just be very direct about your expectations. All of our lesson plans and attachments were due the Wednesday before we taught (ex. plans due today for what I was teaching next week) and it helped so much for her to be able to go over it and see what she thought would work and what wouldn't. Just be patient... it's a really new experience and there were so many times I was like "Did I just say that? I sound like an idiot". The teachers at my school were very "cliquey" and treated me like one of the kids. It was the worst semester of my life and now my best friend is feeling the same way. I know when you have experience sometimes it's like "How can you not know that?!?" but pretend like that doesn't know anything and teach her everything you know with patience. :)
