There are definitely teacher shortages here in MS--IF you're willing to go to these schools. I took my first job in a shortage area--there were 6 openings--he barely interviewed and just gave me the job--but now I see why it's a shortage area!! So the jobs are out there--they're just not the good jobs and the pay is horrible--22 K to start out and you can work for 30 years, have your PhD and you might top 40K--well it's horrible for me anyways--i have student loans galore! As far as advice--I'd love to hear some as well!
