    I just want to start by saying how awesome I think it is that you took over a position as challenging as this. I cannot imagine teaching 9th grade in an urban setting. I think what everyone is saying is really valuable. It's so important to stay consistent and strict. However, with highschool students you have to be respectful. I found that a lot of my male teachers just screamed at us and that didn't earn our respect. I just recently took over a position where the children were labeled as "monsters". It was so scary coming in, but I have stayed strict and consistent and it's working wonders. I see such a change in my kids, granted they are lower elementary. But I find teenagers are all about respect, so don't individually make them look stupid and they probably won't lash out at you. DEFINITELY LOCK THE DOOR!!!
