new year By Carolyn

When I lived in Pennsylvania, we always returned to school the day after Labor Day. For me, the excitement was: The cooler and crisper air after the long, humid summer. Those first few leaves that changed colors on the trees. Hearing the happy chatter of children as they hopped off the school bus, their backs holding shiny new bookbags and their clothes fresh and new. Getting together with staff after a long absence. Brand new faces in the classroom. Those first few "honeymoon" days where everything seems to go right.I now teach in South Carolina. We are returning to school in the summer (August 9). It's still hot here, but Southern schools are air conditioned. I will, once again, look forward to seeing new faces and the freshness of a new year.
