    It's a stylistic thing

    with kids from about fifth through eighth or ninth grade. It's very common here in our middle school. They know they're supposed to punctuate. They don't do it on purpose. Same with no caps. She will probably show you that she knows a lot if you just tell her to rewrite what she just turned it, this time punctuated. I doubt very much that she doesn't understand anything about punctuation. Surely she knows periods.
